Why is it important to find a gym that doesn’t pigeonhole you? There are a number of reasons. One of them affects not only how well you progress in your push toward fitness, but also whether you ultimately succeed or fail. If you’re at a gym that either pushes you beyond your abilities or holds you back, it may be that they’ve already decided whether you’ll succeed or fail. Their decision could affect your success.

The Rosenthal-Jacobson Self Fulfilling Prophecy study shows how pigeonholing affects progress.

In 1968 Rosenthal and Jacobson conducted an experiment in schools. They used an IQ test to measure students progress, but told the teachers that the test measured the student’s readiness to bloom and exceed the average expectation for learning that year. Twenty children were chosen at random to be on a list of potential rapid mental development and given to the teachers. At the end of the year, the progress of those twenty far exceeded the progress of the others and their IQ increased with it. Indeed, the expectations of the teachers dramatically affected their development.

The results of this study show the effect of the expectations of others.

How does this study affect your workout? The teacher’s in the study didn’t consciously push those students, they simply expected more from them and raised the bar of expectation. The results were that the child lived up to those expectations. The same is true in any area where another person is helping you, whether its in a doctor’s office, gym or learning how to program the remote. The person teaching you affects the outcome of your learning by what they believe about your capabilities.

If your gym pigeonholes you as washout or capable of less, you probably will meet their expectations.

If you aren’t going to a gym that expects the best possible results from you, you won’t get the best possible results. Sometimes, that pigeonholing has more to do with the trainer’s own belief in their abilities to help, sometimes it has to do with their belief in your ability. Either way, judging a person before they start working out has no place in our gym. It’s counterproductive. You choose your path and we’ll help you reach it. We know we’ve got the tools to help you and you have the drive to achieve or you wouldn’t be here.
